Colonial Cities of Mexico
In 1521 AD, the course of Mexican history changed forever. The mighty Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán fell to the Spanish conquerors. The Spanish Crown then commanded its conquistadors to explore this new empire with the mission to enforce Spanish rule, bring western civilization and culture to the New World and find gold and silver.
The Colonial period lasted three centuries -until 1821-, when México won its independence from Spain. But while over 150 years have come and gone since then, the cities that were the glories of the Colonial period are still casting their romantic spells.
The charm and romance of México's vivid past comes alive every day in our Colonial sites. What's even more wonderful is that when you look at the map, you'll discover that many of the Colonial cities are close to each other, like Cuernavaca, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Merida, México City, Morelia, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Cristóbal de las Casas, San Miguel de Allende, Tepotzotlán, Tepoztlán, Taxco -with a plenty of silver handicrafts- Veracruz and Zacatecas City.
