Living in Guadalajara, Mexico
CLOTHING
When not at work or formal activities,
Mexicans will dress from quite casually to quite formal, or anything in
between. Restaurants do not require a tie or jacket. Shorts, skirts, tee-shirts,
sandals, and sunglasses are usual clothing items year round for casual
wear. It is also quite acceptable and the weather is agreeable to wearing
slacks, jeans, and maybe a light jacket or sweater.
WEATHER
The climate in Guadalajara is said
to be the nicest, and the most consistent in the world. In the summer
the temperature is usually about 28°C. during the day and cools off to
23°C at night. Winter temperatures are approximately 23°C. during the
day and 14°C. at night. The humidity is quite low in Guadalajara, with
it increasing somewhat during the rainy season.
June to August is the rainy season, which means it quite often rains at
night, but is usually sunny and pleasant during the day. The rain helps
to moderate the warmth, but you should have an umbrella with you during
this season.
CULTURE
There are several customs in Mexico
that may be new to you. For example, it is customary to shake hands when
being introduced, and women often kiss each other's cheeks when meeting
and leaving. Mexicans do not always remove their shoes while inside their
homes.
Smoking is largely acceptable, but becoming more unpopular. If you smoke,
please mention it on your APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION, so that we can match
you with hosts who will not mind.
LAWS
Unlike some places in the world, the legal system
in Mexico has some flaws. Policemen are not always looking after your best
interests, and it is always advisable to stay strictly within the law.
Keep these points in mind while you are in Guadalajara:
- When in a car, the driver and passengers
must always wear seat belts.
- It is illegal to drive after drinking
alcoholic beverages.
- Record the numbers of your credit
cards, passport, etc.
- Label cameras and other valuables
with your name and address.
- Do not take large amounts of money
or wear expensive jewelry in public
